Shawnee’s Greenthumb Popcorn

In 1969, I graduated high school and got on a plane to L.A. to become an actress. I stumbled upon some hippies eating tofu sandwiches and they invited me to protest the war on the U.C.L.A. campus. One of the things that sustained us during that time, was my bag of popcorn that I made with nutritional yeast (a great source of B-complex vitamins, recommended for vegetarians), adding a yummy, cheesy taste. Every year I added an ingredient or two perfecting the flavor, with the intention of it being a complete meal. Spirulina, the last ingredient added, is a blue-green algae with up to 71% protein and all essential amino acids in perfect balance. A hit for young and old alike, I’ve been making my Greenthumb Popcorn ever since.

I live in a treehousetree house in Miami, Florida and when my grandchildren visit I serve them this nutritiously addictive snack. Of course, Shawnee’s Greenthumb Popcorn uses Organic ingredients, guaranteed to be free of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s.) Our commitment is to make a difference in the world, supporting family farmers and helping to improve the quality of “Mother Earth’s” soil, one pop at a time.

In 2013, Art Friedrich joined me in bringing this popcorn to the world. He has founded numerous non-profit organizations, and is currently the Vice-President of Urban Oasis Project, leads the South Florida Food Policy Council, and runs local Farmers Markets.  We’re blessed to have a dedicated and smart young man whose passion for environmental and social justice is making a difference in the world in so many ways.

Ultimately, our goal is to raise enough money to be able to sponsor a support center for homeless and/or troubled teenage girls. As a mother and grandmother, I’ve seen too many youth struggling to find their place in the world with no help from the outside and I want to make a positive impact on all of those girls I can.

We aim to promote healthier eating and challenge the epidemics of obesity, diabetes and malnutrition that are plaguing our society. Processed foods are void of nutrition and high in fat and calories. Our popcorn is full of nutrients and minerals, and it leaves you wanting more just because it tastes so good and your body is feeling happy!
